The oldest Fryderyk Chopin monument in South America is located in Rio de Janeiro’s Red Beach (Praia Vermelha).
The monument was designed by August Zamoyski and put in place on the Praça Floriano square, in front of the Municipal Theatre in 1944, where it remained for the next 15 years. In 1959 Brazilian singer Paulo Fortes began advocating for replacing it with a monument of Carlos Gomes, a conductor and composer. His efforts proved successful and in 1960 Chopin’s monument was removed from the square. Forgotten for a couple of years, in 1964 the 2.5-metre sculpture was installed on the Red Beach, though to be the ideal spot to commemorate the Romantic composer.
