Preludes for Pleyel
Valldemossa. Chopin in his letter to Julia Fontana: "I send you the Preludes. […] In a few weeks you shall have a Ballade [F major], Polonaises [A major and C minor] and a Scherzo [C-sharp minor]." He concludes: "I live in a cell; sometimes I have Arab dances, African sun, Mediterranean sea." On the same day, he writes to Camille Pleyel: "I have finally sent you my Preludes, completed on your piano, which arrived in the best possible shape; neither the sea, nor the bad weather or the customs office in Palma have done any harm to it. I asked Fontana to hand my manuscript to you. I want fifteen thousand francs for it for England and France. Probst, as you know, acquired a property for Haertl in Germany for a thousand francs. I am quits with Wessel in London; he may pay a more expensive price." In postscript: "I realised that I have not yet thanked you for the piano and I write solely about money. Most definitely, I’m a man of business!"

George Sand to Charlotte Marliani
George Sand to Charlotte Marliani: "I am writing to you from my hermitage in Valldemossa […] I am incessantly with the chirping of the piano of Chopin working in his usual beautiful pace, to the astonishment of the listening walls of the cell."
