Chopin's compositions titles
Nohant. Chopin to Julian Fontana: "When it comes to Wessel, it is a chuckle-head, cheater. […] if he made harm to my compositions, it is surely for stupid titles, which he spread despite my prohibition and despite the numerous denials by Mr. Stapelton [representative of the publishing company Wessel & Co.]; that if I had listened to the voice of my soul, I wouldn’t have sent him anything else after those titles. Deny, as much as you can."
Nocturnes Op. 9 received the title Les Murmures de la Seine, Op. 15 – Les Zéphyrs, Op. 27 – Les Plaintives, Op. 32 – // Lamento (in B major) and La Consolazione (in A-flat major), Op. 37 – Les Soupirs, Ballade in G minor was titled La Favorite, in F minor – La Gracieuse, Scherzo in B minor - Le Banquet infernal, and in B-flat minor – La Méditation. Some titles Chopin accepted, among others Souvenir de la Pologne for a cycle of mazurkas. More information:
