Solange after her daughter's death
Solange Clésinger writes a letter to Fryderyk Chopin in Paris: "My dear Chopin. This morning I have received a letter in which you write about my mother [George Sand]. Oh, if it is true that she was interested in my health, then inform her about my misery. If she is still in Paris, let her know how much I suffer and how much consolation I need. [….] But what I am asking for might not be needed at all. She will not move from place. She would be here if she loved me a little bit. My God, how can she be so heartless! Me, who myself had a daughter and lost her, even though so early, I can’t understand her [George Sand]. It is so terrible and so cruel not to be a mother anymore. But she doesn’t know it. Let God save her from learning such news soon. The Pastoure bitch has howled at my window for the whole evening since my daughter was born. She starter howling again several hours before her death. Yesterday evening she came again to howl madly at my door. Is one more victim needed?!"
On February 28, 1848, Solange Clésinger gave birth to a daughter, who died one week later. Fryderyk Chopin, before the tragic news (March 3) had sent to her a letter full of joy with congratulations and good wishes. Next day, during a coincidental meeting with George Sand in the house of Charlotta Marliani, he informed her that she had become a grandmother. He described the meeting to Solange in a letter from March 5.
