Concert and clarinets
Chopin to Tytus Woyciechowski: "After the orchestra rehearsal of the 2nd concerto [in E minor] it has been decided to perform it in public next Monday, that is I will perform it on the 11th of the month. On one side I am not satisfied, but on the other I am interested in the general impression. Rondo, I believe, will impress everybody. Soliwa commented the Rondo: "il vous fait beaucoup d'honneur" ["it brings you much honour"], Kurpiński talked about its originality and Elsner about the rhythm. However, (as I can organize what is called a beautiful evening) in order to eliminate the unlucky clarinets or bassoons between piano, in one part Gładkowska, and in the other Wołków will sing. I will not give for the overture neither Leszek [Elsner], nor Lodoiski [Cherubini], performed usually, but Wilhelm Tell [Rossini]." At the end he adds: "At most one week after the concert I am out of Warsaw. I have already purchased the suitcase, the whole trip is prepared, partitions are corrected, handkerchiefs are in order, trousers are made. Only bidding farewell is left, and this is the saddest part."
The mentioned in the letter "clarinets or bassoons between the piano" allude to the contemporary tradition of performing piano concertos: the programme was ordered in such a way to give space for several soloists, between the first part of the concert and another part, various, smaller compositions were placed.
