Astolphe de Custine Hugo and Lamartine
Paris. Astolphe de Custine writes a letter to Chopin: "Dear Chopinet. Once you have promised me, and I would like it to happen very much, that you came to me for a dinner at 6.00 pm. on Thursday in a week counting from tomorrow, that is the first Thursday of the Lent. I am going to read out for Wiktor Hugo and Lamartine something from my voyage; there are going to be other people, in total about 10 – 12 guests, and if you are so kind as to listen to me, on the condition that at the end of the evening I will have the pleasure to listen to you, I would be very happy, because I am disconsolate that, even though I am thinking about you all the time, and I would like it to happen, I have never had the opportunity to listen to you. This text will be of your interest, maybe to a smaller degree than recently, even though the topic is beautiful, I have found in Berlin the diplomatic correspondence of my father dated with 1792, and at this opportunity I describe his death and I quote surprising facts from my mother’s life. I hope that nothing will discourage you from your presence among friendly listeners; you are one of the friends who is loved, please, remember this."
