Palma, hermitage and what I was spitting out
Palma. Chopin writes a letter to Wojciech Grzymała: "It is a devilish country, it concerns post, people and comfort. The sky is beautiful like Your soul, soil is black as my heart." George Sand writes below: "Chopin has suffered a bit for the past several days. He is much better right now, however he still suffers due to temperature fluctuations, which are quite frequent here. We will finally have the L'Homond fireplace and let the Providence care for us, because there are no doctors or medicines. Maurycy feels very well. The lack of piano makes me worry a lot about him. He has rented some local piano, which brings more irritation than calmness. Despite these difficulties he is working. In three days we move to a beautiful Hermitage, splendidly located. We have bought furniture and this is how we became proprietors in Majorca. The country is charming and we are happy. We don’t miss anything apart from You. (…)  I can’t work yet. We do not have necessary things such as a donkey or water, fire or reliable source of posting manuscripts. That is why I am cooking instead of writing." The same day Chopin writes a letter to Julian Fontana: "For the past two weeks I have been ill like a dog: I have had a cold despite 18 degrees of Celsius, roses, oranges, palm trees and fig trees. 3 doctors, most famous on the whole island: one sniffed what I have spat out, the other tapped, the third touched and listened to me spitting. One said that I am dead, the second one, that I am dying, and the third that I will die. […] I have barely talked them out of bleeding my body, or experimenting other methods on me, and grâce the Providence today I fill like I used to. However, it influences Preludes which you will receive God knows when. In few days I will live in the most beautiful in the world location: sea, mountains, whatever you want. I will live in an old, huge, abandoned, and ruined Carthusian monastery chased out by Mend[izabel] as if especially for me. Close to Palma, nothing more charming: little houses, most poetic cemeteries, in a word, I will feel well there. Only that I don't have the piano yet."
