Genoa
3–18 May, 1839. Chopin and George Sand departed to Genoa for several weeks. They travelled on the ship "Pharamond". After his return, on May 20, Sand writes a letter to Charlotte Marliani: "We are coming back from Genoa, caned with a terrible storm at sea. We experienced amazing views, wonderful nature, palaces, and gardens mounted one on another. […] But Chopin was terribly tired."

Father dies
Mikołaj Chopin dies in Warsaw. Chopin has learnt about his father’s death only a week after the fact – on May 12. He learnt the tragic news from George Sand, who wrote that day: "He is broken down with the fact […] he doesn’t want to see anybody today." And several days alter, in a letter to Fryderyk’s mother Justyna Chopin(May 29): "You know how deep is his sorrow and how much in pain is his soul, but, thanks God, he is not ill. […] I will dedicate my days to your son, he is like my own son."
