Review of the concert at Pleyel’s by Liszt
The newspaper "Revue et Gazette Musicale" publishes famous review by Franz Liszt from the recital by Chopin in the Pleyel salon on April 26. Liszt expresses his admiration, and carefully chooses words: "More in the private circle than among audience composed of strangers, [Chopin] could […] show himself as the person he is in fact, that is as an elegy poet, profound and clear, dreamy. He didn’t need to conquer nor amaze anybody, he cared more about inciting delicate empathy rather than noisy elation and, let’s say it finally, he was completely successful […]"
Fryderyk Chopin delivered a concert in the Pleyel salon on April 26. Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst, violinist, and Laura Damoreau-Cinti, singer, also participated in the concert. Chopin performed preludes, mazurkas, Ballade in F major, Scherzo in C-sharp minor, etudes and nocturnes. In the audience there were among others: Adam Mickiewicz, Stefan Witwicki, and Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Heinrich Heine and Eugène Delacroix. Later George Sand wrote to Hyppolyte Chatiron: "In two hours, with his two hands he earned six thousand several hundred Franks among ovation, calls for encore and pattering of the prettiest ladies in Paris."
