Opera
Paris. Chopin writes a letter to Józef Elsner in which he answers to his prompting to write an opera: "In 1830, I saw how much I have to learn and how much I am far from any standard I saw in You if I had the desire to try to compare myself, but I dared to think: I would like to become only a little bit closer to him, and if not Łokietek, than maybe Laskonogi will be produced out of my brain. However, today when I see that all those hopes were in vain I am forced to make my way in the world as a pianist, putting aside for some time more ambitious artistic perspectives which you rightly present in your letter. (…) I am recognized as a pianist in some places in Germany; some music magazines mentioned my concerts offering hope that soon I will take the place amongst the first virtuosos of my instrument."

Berlioz
Paris. Chopin participates in the third in a series of concerts by Hector Berlioz for the benefis of Harriet Smithson, his future wife. He performs the Romance from the Concerto in E minor with the accompaniment of the orchestra conducted by Narcise Girard. Among Berlioz’s compositions which were performed at this concert there were among other: Overture to King Lear and Harald in Italy. Several days later, on the 20th of December, the review appears in "Le Pianiste" where it was stated that "Andante [Romance] has been performed in a delightful way"; next review, dated with 28th December in "Gazette Musicale" Chopin is described as a "spirited composer and unique pianist."

Piano anchored
Palma. Chopin writes a letter to Julian Fontana: "Only today I have received a message that on 1 Decemb. in Marseille the piano was loaded on the merchant ship. The letter from Marseille was posted 14 days ago. I hope the piano will spend winter in the port or anchored (because here nobody moves when it’s raining) and that I will receive it only when I will be leaving Majorca, what makes me happy because apart from 500 Franks of the duty I will have the pleasure to wrap it up for the journey back. For the time being my manuscripts are asleep, and I can’t sleep, I only cough and I am for a long time now all in medical plasters, I am waiting for the spring or something else… Tomorrow I go to this marvelous Valldemossa monastery to write in the monastery ward of old monk, who might have had in his spirit more fire than me, but he suppressed it, suppressed and put it out because he had it in vain."

Flu
Paris. Fryderyk Chopin in his letter to Solange Clésinger: "It’s so good that you don’t have flu. All Paris is coughing. I am suffocating and I await cholera. Ludwika is writing that it is arriving at the gates of Warsaw and that nobody is afraid of it. (…) Well, I move so little, I only visit Grzym[ała], from time to time, who is not going out at all. The duchess does not leave her chaise longue just like two years ago. The sale is approaching, but is is not going to be splendid. For sure there won’t be any ball."
