Funeral of Staszic and illness

Warsaw. Chopin writes a letter to Jan Białobłocki relating the demonstrative funeral of Stanisław Staszic which took place on the 24th of January: "I will only tell you that academic scientists carried him from the Holy cross church to the very Bielany, where he wanted to be buried, Skarbek delivered a speech at the tomb, that his coffin was stripped due to love and enthusiasm and I also have a piece of mortcloth as a souvenir, finally that 20 thousand people assisted in his last journey to the cemetery. There were several serious spoken duels with merchants who wanted to carry the coffin of the Respected Man, and with other civil people who also wanted to win the coffin from Academics who bravely resisted."

He adds about himself: "Everybody is getting sick an me too. You expect, that all this is scribbled, written sitting at the desk, it is not true, I am writing this lying in the bed, with head in the cap, because I have swollen glands, and our Roemer says it is a Catharral Affection. It is true that recently since Saturday till Thursday every evening I came back home at 2 am., but it is nothing, I have slept well every next day."
