Nohant and Sonata in B-flat minor
Since May 22, Chopin travels from Marseille to Arles by ship, and from there - by stagecoach through St. Etienne, Montbrison and Clermont — to Nohant, where he will spend the whole summer (since June 1 to October 10). Nohant, property of George Sand, is located close to La Châtre, about 300 km to the south of Paris. In his letter to Grzymała Chopin wrote: "The countryside is beautiful, nightingales, skylarks, only you, Bird are missing." George Sand (in her letter from June 3 to Charlotte Marliani): "He has got a beautiful piano and he delights us from dawn till dusk." The piano has been ordered by George Sand at Pleyel, already in Marseille as a surprise: "He has already created thrilling things since it is here."
This year Chopin composes in Nohant: Nocturne in G major Op. 37 No. 2, three remaining Mazurkas from the opus 41; he is working to complete the Ballade in F major Op. 38, Scherzo in C-sharp minor Op. 39 and the main work of that summer: Sonata in B minor Op. 35.
