About Scotland
Chopin in his letter to Adolf Gutmann: "I am in Scotland, this beautiful country of Walter Scott, with all the reminiscences of Maria Stuart, two Charles, etc. I am roaming from one Lord to another, from one Count to another. And everywhere I am welcomed with the most sincere kindness and infinite hospitality; everywhere I see perfect pianos, beautiful paintings and impressive libraries, also hunting, dogs, dinners without end, finally cellars which I make use the least of all. It is difficult to imagine the sophisticated splendour and comfort reigning on English castles. […] I am writing from the house of Lord Torphichen. Here, above the room I am living in, John Knox, the Scottish reformer, delivered communion for the first time. All this is influencing my imagination – a park with ancient trees, precipices, ruins of ancient castles, corridors without end with innumerable portraits of ancestors; there is even some red cap which is strolling at night. And I am strolling with my uncertainty. Cholera is approaching, in London there is fog and spleen."
