proposal

Chopin proposes to Maria Wodzińska and his proposal is accepted. The engagement is kept in secret;...

Fryderyk and Maria had known each other since their childhood, because her older brothers lived for a year in a rented place at Mikołaj Chopin’s house in Warsaw. Chopin started to write letters to Maria when he already lived in Paris. Their first meeting took place in Dresden in September 1835, where he came from Karlsbad after having met his parents. Next meeting took place a year later, on July 28 in Marienbad. They stayed there in the same hotel "Zum Weissen Schwan". At the end of August, 1836, they went together accompanied by her mother to Dresden, where Chopin proposed to Maria at the "grey hour". However, the wedding did not take place due to lack of consent of Maria’s father. Letters between Fryderyk and Maria and her mother stopped in 1837. Letters by Maria and her family dated 1835 – 1837 Chopin put in a file and bound with a pink ribbon putting an inscription on them saying : "My Trouble" (pl. "Moja bieda").
